Question 1 on Sula: In Spike Lee’s debut feature length film, She’s Gotta Have It, how is the leading lady Nola Darling a contemporary iteration of Sula? What are Sula/Nola Darling’s similarities? Differences?

It’s been a minute since i’ve engaged with either Sula or Nola Darling. I do recall that they both claimed their sexual/sensual goddess selves…I guess that the consequences of their individual sexuality’s were different; Sula’s being more dire and traumatic.

Likewise, it’s been a while since I read Sula or saw She’s Gotta Have It, but if I can lean on the most resonant and light-beam-piercing-through thin-air memories of either of those moments, it would be from a line I heard a local intellectual recently say about herself. “I’m irrepressibly me.” This is how I think of both of these characters. They were self-possessed and self-acclaimed.
